Leap Auctions, LLC continues to extend friendly customer service, and in so doing we have compiled a Heavy Construction Equipment Glossary list.
Articulated truck: Articulated trucks are commonly utilized in construction work. They are designed for carrying large loads over rough terrain. Articulated trucks are designed with a drive system that represent the number of wheels and axles it has. Typically, articulated trucks are engineered with six wheels on three axles.
Bulldozer: A bulldozer is a piece of heavy construction equipment that features a metal blade which is used for pushing large amounts of dirt, sand or debris for construction purposes. Most dozers are designed with tracks.
Cat skinner: Cat skinner is a term often used to describe a person who operators a dozer. The word “cat” originated from the Caterpillar Tractor, which is a dozer manufacturer.
Compactor: As the name suggests, a compactor is a machine that compacts the layers of various materials such as soil or asphalt and reduce the thickness of the layers by reducing air voids.
Crane: A crane is a type of machine used for lifting heavy materials and transporting them. A crane is generally equipped with a hoist rope, sheaves and wire ropes or chains that can be used to lift and lower materials as well as move them horizontally.
Crawlers: Crawlers are versatile machines that can dig trenches, load trucks, lift pipes and handle various attachments such as hydraulic breakers, shears and grapples.
Dump Truck: Used to move bulky items, dump trucks are engineered with a dump body for convenient unloading.
Earthmover: With any piece of heavy construction equipment that is used to move or dig dirt or earth the term “earthmover” is frequently used. Machines such as bulldozers, backhoes, and other earth moving machines are included. The term earthmover is a general term that describes the function of the equipment as opposed to naming the actual piece of equipment.
Excavator: Excavators are a digging piece of equipment at a construction site. These machines are found in a variety of sizes and styles. Most excavators have a backhoe and a cab for the operator.
Forklift: A forklift is also known as a lift truck and a fork truck. It is a vehicle with a pronged device in front for lifting and carrying heavy loads short distances.
Grader: A grader has a swiveling blade which is strategically placed between the two wheel shafts to level the ground or to clear away debris off roadways and other surfaces.
Hydraulic Shovel: Machine designed with a pivot cab, equipped with an attached bucket used for transporting various types of materials.
Loader: A loader is used to move aside or load materials such as asphalt, dirt, demolition debris, snow, gravel, logs, rock, sand etc. into or onto another type of machinery such as a dump truck or conveyor belt. There are many types of loaders such as payloader, scoop, shovel as well as bucket, front, front-end, skip, wheel or skid-steer.
Road Roller: A road roller is also known as a roller-compactor. As the name suggests, it is a vehicle used to compact soil, concrete, gravel or asphalt for the construction of roads and foundations.
Scraper: A scraper is heavy construction equipment that utilizes a blade to scrape the ground, roadbeds, and other surfaces that store the rubble into a convenient bowl for easy disposal.
Skidder: Heavy construction equipment associated with skidders may have two different meanings. One term for skidder refers to a person in charge of the construction team making a skid road. In other cases, the word skidder describes the engine that hauls cable for skidding logs.
Wheel Loader: A wheel loader is a piece construction equipment used to excavate; designed with a wheel tractor, backhoe, and front loader.
